Step one – Step three – You’re Out

Today we received the best cover letter plus resume that our office has ever seen – bar none. We placed 4 different online ads for a front end person for a high end cosmetic dentist. Out of the 150 or…

Dentists Hire Too Fast and Fire Too Slow

Dental schools are filled chocker-block full of curriculum, leaving precious little time at the completion for the information required to actually run a successful practice. If you were opening your doors right out of school (uncommon but not unheard of)…

City Dentist or Country Dentist

Where to practice?  We reside on the west coast – where many brand new dentists congregate.  The weather is fine (when it is not raining cats and dogs), and there is an urban attraction to living in the big city. Entertainment is plentiful – and those classmates practicing in the hinterland are green with envy!  Or are they?

Here are some very basic arithmetical examples.  A young dentist hanging out his shingle for his/her first practice can lay out $750,000 or more in this city. When credit was more readily available the banks were throwing funding at anyone with a DDS.  One bank not only loaned out 1.8 million to a 4 year practicing dentist – they actually suggested he keep his condo in one part of the city and rent it out while they were willing to write a massive…

I’ve Got the Best Website!

Everyone knows the age old rule about not mixing business and relatives.  Let’s face it – if there is going to be a problem with a crown it is likely to be with your brother-in-law whom you could really do without – for a reduced fee that is already seeming absurd when you listen to the whining!

I just attended a grand opening of a family member’s new martial arts studio. He soaked every available dollar from his contracting business, plus hundreds of hours of ‘volunteer’ labour from relatives to convert a pretty shabby piece of commercial real estate into a karate studio.  Of course they signed the lease, registered the corporate name, and laid out their marketing plan without asking for any advice. Only when it was complete did they look for confirmation that they had indeed ‘done good’Not.

It’s Not About You!

We recently interviewed a practice seeking dental marketing. The dentist was late (hazards of our occupation) which was not unusual.  Everything dental always trumps everything marketing – even if they called the meeting. This meant we now had 40 minutes to do a one hour presentation.

Although congenial, this practitioner argued with us on just about every point.  He ruled out of hand numerous issues I must fall on my sword over – because we have proven them time and again in hundreds of practices. The issues are not the primary thing here – the incredible close-mindedness IS the issue.  We don’t tell you how to prep a crown, or perform an endo, or repair anything dental. That is your gig. I know there is more than one option to treat many dental conditions, and it is up to each individual…

Anatomy of the Dental ‘Business’

Dentistry can be a ‘calling’.  It may be a noble profession that enables one to both earn a significant income as well as help the public in both obtaining decent oral health and maintaining it.  Dentists are trained in university dental schools with a curriculum that is chocker block full of clinical training, and precious little (if any) business training.

As practice consultants, we have literally walked in one thousand dental doors doing various surveys and evaluations.  Invariably the primary reason we may have been called in is not the biggest issue affecting the practice. Frequently the dentist tells us they simply need help in lead generation, or closing cases.  Not until we arrive on site and have a chance to interview all players individually off-site do we begin to see accurately the scope of the problem or problems within any…
